New Research Project "iNTeg-Risk"

Category: Tunnelling & Construction, Traffic & Environment

By: Frank Leismann

The multidisciplinary "iNTeg-Risk" research project began in December 2008 with participation of STUVA. The full English caption for the project is "Early Recognition, Monitoring and Integrated Management of emerging, new technology-related Risks". The total budget of the project sponsored by the European Commission amounts to 19.3 mill. € split up over 5 years (December 2008 till May 2013). Altogether 69 partners from various disciplines are involved.

The background and occasion for iNTeg-Risk is the rapid development of so-called·"New Technologies" on all technical sectors, whose advantages are in many cases associated with new risks. The prerequisite for effectively mastering these risks is being able to recognise and assess them as soon as possible based on objective and uniform criteria.

As a consequence iNTeg-Risk is pursuing the aim of improving risk management in European industry. This improvement is to be achieved by working out universally applicable principles and management paradigm for emerging risks in a standard form, language and assessment methods.

STUVA's specific contribution appraises safety aspects in the case of deep-lying underground transportation facilities with multifunctional use, which thus lies in STUVA's field of core competence. The title of this package is "Safety and Security of underground Hubs with interconnected Transportation Services and Shopping Centers". It will be pursued from March 2009 till November 2010 in close collaboration with partners from L-surF Services (VSH, INERIS, SP).

The iNTeg-Risk project pursues the following objective

  • Improving the early recognition and commensurate monitoring of emerging risks
  • Cutting down on the necessary time from development to introduction to the market of key technologies
  • Reducing accidents occurring as a result of emerging risks (estimated cost of damage within the 27 EU countries: 75 bil.€)
  • Decreasing reaction times of those responsible in the event of accidents
  • Altogether a perceptible improvement in technical and operational safety and security, environmental friendliness and social responsibility within the EU.
