Independent power supply for traffic tunnels

Fuel cell based industrial power supply module

The project "Fuel cell based industrial power supply module" investigated the applicability of fuel cell systems as an uninterruptible power supply for traffic tunnels. The aim was to replace the expensive and high-maintenance lead-acid batteries that used to be found in tunnels' operating rooms with economically attractive fuel cell systems.
A key component of the concept promoted by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) is the development of an optimally coordinated overall system through consistent interaction of all parties involved (users, system developers and component developers) in all steps, from conception to completion of the system.

In the project, the STUVA has implemented the task areas "Definition of the Requirements of the Tunneling Market", "Determination of Environmental Conditions", "Definition of System Requirements" and "Concept for System Integration". Furthermore, in the test halls of the STUVA, the developed fuel cells were designed under realistic conditions in the powerful STUVA climate chamber for a test operation.
