Guide for barrier-free bus stops in Saarland
Standards for the construction of barrier-free bus stops as a basis for funding
With the ‘Standards for the construction of barrier-free bus stops’ drawn up by the STUVA on behalf of the Saarland Ministry of the Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (MUKMAV), the Saarland state government is providing its local authorities and municipalities with a valuable planning aid for the construction, conversion and expansion of bus stops. The guideline is a consistent step towards the completely barrier-free design of public transport for all people with limited mobility in Saarland and their self-determined participation in social life.
The state government has been funding the expansion, conversion and new construction of road-based public transport stops (bus stops) for years, currently (2024) with 90% of the eligible costs based on the NMOB accessibility guideline. In future, this funding can only be applied for if the standards set out in the guideline are taken into account. A checklist will be used to ensure that applications are processed and that the planning complies with the guidelines. The aim of this binding application of the guideline is to avoid planning errors in future and to achieve a standardised expansion standard. Of course, the guide is also recommended reading for all other people outside Saarland who are interested in the topic, as it clearly explains the key aspects of completely barrier-free public bus transport on the infrastructure side, but also includes vehicle technology and operational aspects as key factors in the overall concept.
