KOINOR: STUVA research for civil security

A new research project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research started its work in August 2018. Under the name KOINOR, STUVA and its research partners are developing new concepts and processes for the fire protection upgrading and retrofitting of underground traffic structures. KOINOR is funded with 1.4 million euros within the BMBF programme "Research for Civil Security". The project duration is 3 years.

FKZ: 13N14569

A fire in a tunnel is not only a direct threat to people. From temperatures of approx. 300 °C, massive damage to the structure itself can also occur. Due to their age, many tunnels do not have the necessary resistance to fire. In order to upgrade these tunnels and at the same time to impair traffic as little as possible, it is necessary to develop new procedures and concepts.

Within the framework of the KOINOR project, concepts for the upgrading of tunnels in the event of a fire are being developed. This includes, among other things, the development of a building material that can be retrofitted and has a high fire resistance. It must be possible to apply this thinly so that the diameter of the tunnel is not reduced too much. In order to ensure the practical suitability of the work, the different regulations of the different modes of transport are taken into account from the outset. Concepts will be developed to optimally plan and implement upgrading measures so that the tunnel is only closed to traffic for a short period of time.

The results of the project are to be demonstrated in a construction project on a real tunnel. For this purpose, an older existing tunnel in the area of public transport, a railway line or a road will be upgraded with regard to fire resistance. The inclusion of associated partners from all relevant transport modes will ensure the practical suitability and transferability of the results.
