Light rail line with south branch

Karlsruhe wears its nickname "Fächerstadt" for good reasons . The 32 streets, which fan out in all directions from the castle, shape the beautiful baroque cityscape and are both a blessing and a curse at the same time. For today's traffic volume, the city center of Karlsruhe has long ceased to grow. For this reason, the citizens decided in 2004 to build a new light rail tunnel, consisting of a tunnel tube in east-west direction and one in north-south direction.
Seven subterranean stations, an underground triangle and three ramps had to be built to ultimately save the city from the traffic infarction and to create a real pedestrian zone that stretches from the Europaplatz across the market square to the Kronenplatz.
STUVAtec has provided KASIG with advice on fire safety from the first preliminary planning up to the construction of the project and prepared fire protection concepts for all stops and safety concepts for the tunnel sections. Particularly challenging from the point of view of fire protection were the up to 100 m long narrow and low-rising stops, which lie exclusively under the streets of the densely built-up inner city and not under the largely historical houses. Here it was necessary to keep the evacuation times as short as possible by appropriate fire protection measures and to minimize the smoke in the event of a fire by means of a particularly efficient ventilation system and the consistent use of non-flammable materials.
